The anaphoric semantics of partial control

چکیده

PC has received considerable interest, at first from a syntactic perspective (cf. in particular the work of Landau), more recently also in semantics [2, 7, 9]. PC touches on important theoretical questions such as how the controller-controllee relation is established and what the denotation of a control complement is. Morever it raises new questions such as why there is no ‘superset control’ (controller ⊃ PRO) or why there is no partial raising [7]. The semantic analyses in [2, 7, 9] all make PC unexceptional and directly allowed by the semantics e.g. by having the control verb introduce an embedded subject which is existentially quantified and relates to the controller via a subset relation rather than equality [7]. Such approaches are at odds with the oftmade observation that PC is a marked, sometimes marginal option that requires contextual support. This paper offers a new analysis that accounts for this observation by assimilating PC to bridging in anaphoric resolution. The approach is formalized in an extended version of partial, compositional DRT (PCDRT) [3]. Context-dependency of PC PC requires a contextually salient plurality, such as the one primed by chair in (1), to be felicitous. For example, the second sentence of (2) can only mean ‘He wants to have lunch with me’, as the context does not provide other suitable ways of constructing the plural antecedent for PRO that the complement requires.

EFL Learners' Sensitivity to Linguistic and Discourse Factors in the Process of Anaphoric Resolution

The readers' ability to integrate current information with given information has been considered as an important component of reading comprehension process. One aspect of this integration process involves anaphoric resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of anaphoric resolution, focusing on inferential rigidity of different types of anaphoric ties. Ninety EFL learner...

On the Interpretation of Anaphoric Noun Phrases: Towards a Full Understanding of Partial Matches

Starting from the assumption that NPs of all kinds can be anaphoric on antecedents in the linguistic context, we work towards a general theory of context-dependent NP meaning. Two complicating factors are that the relation between anaphors and antecedents is by no means unrestricted and that often there is a partial match between anaphor and antecedent. We argue that the presuppositions-as-anap...

Control Issues in Anaphor Resolution

Much research in computational linguistics has concentrated on treating the individual phenomena of natural language rather than on how these treatments can be made to work together. This paper discusses four respects in which processes embodying individual treatments must be made to cooperate with one another if anaphoric expressions are to be interpreted correctly. These are the coordination ...

Dynamic Interpretations and Interpretation Structures

Dynamic semantics has its roots in the research of anaphoric reference. It is well known that in general anaphoric relations are highly context sensitive and defeasible. However, most standard frameworks of dynamic semantics, such as Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) and Dynamic Predicate Logic, do not deal with problems of interpretation revision 1 (cf. [6]). Furthermore, these frameworks ...

Coreference and Contextually Restricted Quantification

The aim of this paper is to argue that update semantics is a natural framework for contextually restricted quantification, and to illustrate its use in the analysis of anaphoric definite descriptions and certain other anaphoric terms. The present discussion remains at an informal level, but takes place against the background of the system of update semantics for the language of modal predicate ...
